Woke up with an email with the subject line “a proposal”, I assumed it was spam and was about to delete it but for some unknown reason decided to open it.
A few weeks later I found myself in Maison Michel’s atelier in Paris.
It was like being transported back in time.
Craftsmanship, wisdom and old mesmerizing tools.
I was at the same time struck by a “punk rock” spirit, hands moving over material in new and unexpected ways.
This book is a tribute to a truly inspiring group of people who have fundamental knowledge about hat making and a deep mastery in their hands.

ジェスパー・ヘインズ(Jesper Haynes)

These images were taken at nighttime overlooking 404 Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg. They represent a bird’s view of a microcosm of Brooklyn, New York.
I lived in a four-story walkup with a Brazilian restaurant on the ground floor. No one was ever aware of me hanging out of my windows while taking these pictures, except one time when a cop caught me looking down at him through my lens. I had to go down and reassure him I was no danger to him, and making sure that he was no danger to me.

After I moved to New York in the early 1980’s I got a job printing black and white in Ralph Gibson’s darkroom, at the same time I lived in Larry Clark’s apartment on Hudson and Canal and next door was my favorite nightclub at the time, Area.
I never saw daylight.
My goal was to shoot one roll of black and white film every day, sometimes I succeeded, often not. 20 years later I had a collection of thousands of rolls of film and for each roll a contact sheet was created, these contact sheets represented my photographic life, it was my diary. We were in love with the city and with the feeling that anything is possible and anything goes.
This is my love story and tribute to New York of the 1980’s.

I have always loved my life and I love inviting my subjects into the celebration of being alive and loving and abundance. I never understood why people complain and spread negative feelings so I choose to photograph from a place of love.
Have you ever woken up and felt like you just love everybody and everything? This feeling propels me and compels me to connect to any stranger.
This is the heart of my photography.
2012年5月、KATAの杮落しは、80年代のNYクラブカルチャーシーンの写真が話題となった、

Twelve years ago I stumbled into Gig Groceries, a bar on Sukhumvit soi 16 in Bangkok and it was love at first sight.
Gig was the place to hang out if you were in the art, music and movie indie scene, and the kind of place where anything could and would happen on any given night. Bands would come together and jam, movies would be screened on one of the walls while actors discussed film projects, and anyone who felt inspired to get up and DJ would do so.
It is now more than ten years since Gig Groceries closed, in it’s wake new venues have come and gone yet many of the same people are still in the scene still doing their thing, continuing the Gig spirit.
This is a tribute to Bangkok’s indie scene and to the amazingly gifted and wonderful people that make Bangkok such a great city to explore life’s mysteries in.

Another punky street photography series by Jesper Haynes. Tokyo's Shibuya is famous for its pedestrian scramble or X-crossing - supposedly the busiest in the world. It is here Haynes have been capturing mostly young women from skirt down to shoes hurrying along the streets.
Much like his early book "St. Marks" - "Shibuya Scramble" has a punk aura to it -- raw, personal, grainy black & whites - drawing on punk fanzine aesthetic of the 70s-80s.

Group exhibition at Hendershot gallery, New York February 2012
Come and Get It! (February 10 - March 16, 2012) features the work of Alben, Daniel Arango, Ghost of a Dream, Jesper Haynes, Ted Noten, Rachel Bee Porter, Tom Sanford, Shelter Serra and Marie Vic, each of whom explores the intersection between popular culture, consumerism and art. While the artist's reference to popular culture is certainly not a new endeavor, the boundary between art and commerce has become increasingly faint. Inspired by bold and overt advertisements scattered throughout Manhattan, the title of this show further exaggerates the sales tactics used to seduce us into making an impulsive purchase. For the duration of this five-week exhibition, Hendershot Gallery has redesigned its gallery space by creating an exhibition design that mimics the retail experience.

In 1986, Jesper moved to his apartment on the corner of St. Marks and First Avenue. It was above the St. Mark’s Bar & Grill where the Rolling Stones had just filmed the video for “Waiting on a Friend”. It was to be his home, and the backdrop for much of his photography, for the next 20 years.
Jesper’s apartment became ‘home’ to a wonderful mix of roommates, visitors, friends, lovers, total strangers and people that just needed a place to crash ... or party. It also became the place where he photographed – blurring the lines completely between his life and his art. Everything was spontaneous. ‘I just made sure I had a camera in my hand.’

" Hi Jesper,
I stumbled upon gallery onetwentyeight today and I can't stop thinking about your exhibit. I can't stop looking at your photographs in your book I purchased. The life in the images oozes out of each one. I feel like I can hear the voices of the beautiful people in your photographs; like I can feel the touch of the skin on skin and the energy shared in each memory. I'm sure it sounds absurd, but your photographs make me feel like your memories are my own.
I just wanted to send you a note of thanks for sharing your art. Yours aren't just portraits - they're storytellers and dreams that I wish I could have each night.
Love, Amy "
